The Laura Ingalls Wilder Park & Museum welcomed several school groups in May 2023, providing students with a hands-on opportunity to learn about local history and pioneer life.

On May 17, Little Miss Laura, Brielle Gavin, joined the third and fourth graders from St. Patrick Catholic School in Waukon, IA. Brielle shared her essay from last year, describing how she became Little Miss Laura and what it means to represent the museum. Students enjoyed connecting with her story and learning about Laura Ingalls Wilder’s time in Burr Oak.

On May 24, third graders from Riceville, IA visited the museum for a morning of exploration. They toured the museum, learned about the Burr Oak Bank building and the 1931 robbery, posed for a group photo, and participated in several pioneer games, bringing history to life in a fun and interactive way.

Other schools that visited in 2023 included East Elementary School (Waukon), Howard-Winneshiek School (Cresco), Immanuel Lutheran School (Plainview, MN), Osage, Riceville, St. Ansgar, and St. Patrick Catholic School (Waukon).

The museum thanks all the students, teachers, and volunteers who helped make these visits educational and memorable. These field trips are a wonderful way to connect young learners with Burr Oak’s history and the legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
