The Steadman Room

A few items that belonged to Laura are displayed in the Steadman’s room, such as a quilt block, hand-kerchiefs, a calling card, dishes, glasses, embroidery work and sewing kit.

Laura’s first book, Little House in the Big Woods, was published in 1932 when she was 65 years old. The first illustrators were Helen Sewell and Mildred Boyle.

Rose Wilder Lane, Laura and Almanzo’s daughter, was a well-known author of both fiction and non-fiction long before Laura’s writing career began. Rose encouraged Laura to write down her stories, helped edit them, and worked with publishers on behalf of her mother.Rose married Gillette Lane in 1909. Her only child, a son, was stillborn. Rose divorced in 1918 and never remarried.
