The Northwest Room

This is one of 4 rooms upstairs in the hotel. The hotel guests were usually men, traveling on horseback or by stage coach. Very few women and children stayed in this hotel. It was too expensive for a family to stay for the night. They would most likely be traveling with their wagons and would “camp out” along the road, often parking their wagons in the yards of Burr Oak residents. Different styles of suitcases have been placed on the bed.

For 25 cents you could have a spot on a bed this size. You shared your room and your bed with strangers, sometimes as many as three people in a bed. Three in a bed often meant that you would sleep across the bed with your feet hanging off the side.

The wallpaper was purchased from a company in Chicago. The pattern is similar to those from the early 1900’s. Antique curling irons have been placed on the dresser. One has moveable handles so that you can place the iron over the glass of the kerosene lamp to heat up.
